The 24 Runes of Elder Futharck correspond to the 15 degree half signs of the zodiac called 'Horae'. The 24 Runes of the Elder Futharck series begin with Fehu - the first half of Aries - and continue through the zodiac, two runes for each sign.

According to Norse mythology, Odin "spied" these runes while he hung upside down from the World Tree Yggdrasil. This Tree is the polar axis or "Urminsul pillar" around which the world turns. The 360 degree Earth Zodiac divides into 24 Rune zones each 15 degrees of longitude like the 15-degree time zones. Zodiacal sign lines and rune lines converge at the North Pole where Odin received the Runes.

Each Rune has a “stadha” or body mudra, and a chant, or “galdr,” to help invoke and channel its influence. Rune stadhas are more effective in their zodiacal “season” or hour of day. Fehu is the rune for the first hour after Sunrise just as it is the rune for the first half of Aries. Each hour of the day has its own Rune. Note: The 24 Runes correspond to "planetary hours" in the day cycle rather than the numbers on a clock. The 12 planetary hours of day evenly divide between Sunrise and Sunset; the planetary hours of night evenly divide the time between Sunset and Sunrise of the following day.

The astrologer philosopher Dane Rudhyar defined the zodiac as "a play of four acts" with 24 "scenes." His keynotes for the 24 scenes of the zodiacal play correspond to the runes of the Elder Futharck sequence. For example, Rudhyar’s keynote for the first half of Scorpio - scene 15 - is Communion. The Rune Elhaz is seen as a Rainbow Bridge linking Heaven and Earth. See Dane Rudhyar’s book An Astrological Mandala for additional information about this division of the zodiac. An analysis of the Rune Elhaz follows.

Origin of the Runes http://www.witchscauldron.net/cauldron/runes.htm

As told in the Edda, Odin hangs suspended from the World Tree for 9 Nights to receive the mystery of the Runes. This mythic scene of ancient time is represented in Tarot Key 12 The Hanged Man.

Runes of the elder futhark http://the-oracle-answers.com/runes/futhark.php The runic alphabet is traditionally known as futhark after the first six letters. Casting runes used as a form of divination in Europe since the 4th century.

ELHAZ: THE RAINBOW BRIDGE An Elder Futharck Rune Magic Key

ELHAZ is the rune for the first half of Scorpio. Scorpio is the zodiacal sign of transformation, elimination and regeneration. Whatever needs releasing or transforming comes to awareness in this time. Elhaz is translated variously as Elk,Yew and Swan. The Elhaz rune stadha and galdr are designed to uplift and protect what is to be preserved in the time of transformation. Whatever resists upliftment and transformation may better be let go. Conduct and Conduction are keynotes of the Elhaz rune.

ELHAZ is the Rainbow Rune of Protection and Peace. The Peace Symbol is formed by adding a circle (the World) around the Elhaz rune. The Elhaz rune is a vertical line with “arms” lifted. Elhaz represents the rainbow bridge (antahkarana) connecting earth and heaven, personality and soul. Protection comes from aligning with soul purpose. Right conduct (con: with, duct: flow) insures protection and brings peace of mind and heart.

ELHAZ IDEOGRAMS Some of the ideograms for this rune are: the horns of an elk, a tree with branches, the yew tree or yew bow, a splayed hand and a swan in flight. The horns of the elk are for protection and to aid attunement to subtle energies of spirit and nature. The tree is the World Tree and the Iroquois Tree of Peace under which all nations are gathered. Yew, a tree sacred to the Celts, is believed to bring death and transformation. This hora / rune period is the time of the Yew. The Native American sign for peaceful greeting is a splayed right hand raised with palm forward. This “Sign” brings protection as the raised palm chakra projects a clearing influence. Cygnus the Swan flies high in the evening sky at this time of year. Many know this constellation as the Northern Cross, another sign of protection in this time.

FUTHARCK COMMENTARY “The Proto-Germanic form Algiz means ‘protection,’ and its stave form is perhaps derived from the basic sign of defense and protection, the splayed hand. The concept of the valkyrjur also has been connected to this stave through the interpretation of the name as ‘swan.’ The valkyrjur are protective, life-giving beings who fly by means of magical cloaks made of swan feathers. These beings are protectors, power givers, and a mode by which Odhinn communicates with his chosen Heroes. The sign Elhaz is often found carved into spears for protection and victory. Elhaz, meaning ‘elk,’ refers to the four cosmic harts that constantly bite at the needles of the world-tree…The Gothic word alhs (sanctuary) has been related to this rune. This is a protected grove or enclosure dedicated to the gods... Elhaz is the power of human life and spirit striving toward the world of the Aesir… It is the rune of connection between gods and humanity, the force that draws the consciousness of man toward the realm of the gods... The Z-rune is the three-colored bridge of shimmering light, Bifrost, the ‘Rainbow Bridge’ of Norse mythology. This bridge connects Asgardhr, Midgardr, and Hel. It is another mode for the consciousness to traverse the worlds. ” - Futharck: A Handbook of Rune Magic by Edred Thorsson

The ELHAZ Rune prepares the way for the mid-Scorpio power gate on November 7. This is one of the four fixed sign midpoint power gates defined by Dane Rudhyar. The Aces of the Tarot are assigned to these energy gates according to their element. The 15 degrees Scorpio power gate is the Ace of Cups: A White Dove representing the Holy Spirit is flying down toward an overflowing chalice resting in the palm of a hand reaching out from a cloud. This is the Hand of Divine Providence, the Cup is the Grail of divine love. The Dove brings in its beak a white cross-quartered circle symbolic of the Anima Mundi, the compassionate soul of the world.

What does it mean? The symbol formation of 4 lights neatly outlines the Norse Rune of Protection aka Elhaz or the Rainbow Bridge. Adopted by the ever eclectic hippies in the late 60s, this pattern became the familiar peace symbol. Actually it can make of the body an energetic instrument when performed as a rune stadha: Standing arms and face upraised while intoning a zzzzmmm sound that resonates palm chakras. This stadha is usually done oriented to the Sun, east if before Sunrise, west after Sunset, north midnight - or orienting toward / connecting with whatever cosmic energy source, person or group you might wish (for more info Google "Elhaz Rune stadha" and you will be taken to Page 48 of Edred Thorsson’s book Futharck).

What's your Rune, Who's your Goddess?

Our familiar zodiac of 12 signs divides neatly into 24 half signs called Horae. Each Hora is symbolized by a Rune (one of the 24 Elder Futharck series) and each is ruled by one of 24 goddesses embodied in the 24 most significant minor planets in the asteroid belt (a.k.a. Aphrodite's girdle). The 24 Horae also divide into 8 Watches or half seasons. Each Watch represents about 6 weeks in the year or about 3 hours in the day cycle. A year is like a day, the 24 Horae of the year parallel in nature the 24 hours of the day. Each Hour (planetary hour) has its Rune and its Goddess as does each Hora of the year. In mythology the Horae are time keepers, the Ladies of the Hours.
